This report presents the findings from a two day workshop on the health effects of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and strategies for research, response, and recovery activities. Issues pertaining to the health effects of chemical exposures and social and economic disruptions caused by the spill are discussed. Issues relating to culture, language, and diverse populations are discussed throughout the report. Specific topics include: challenges, and strategies, associated with obtaining reliable demographic and linguistic data on affected populations, the development of culturally and linguistically appropriate risk communication strategies, and high rates of health disparities in the Gulf Coast region.
