Description:

This article aims to define cultural competence based upon review of the relevant literature of academic, foundation, and government publications. The goal was to determine sociocultural barriers to health care, the level of the health care system in which these barriers exist, and how a focus on cultural competence could address these barriers. Such barriers were found at the organizational, structural, and clinical levels, and a framework of cultural competence interventions to address racial/ethnic health disparities was developed.
