Description:This reports details the experiences of over forty survivors of Hurricane Katrina, collected through interviews six months following the storm. The report shows that almost all of the survivors interviewed were suffering from emotional and mental trauma, went without needed health care and medications for weeks or even months, and found it difficult to connect with care due to the loss of health care facilities and a lack of transportation and information. Problems were especially significant for the uninsured and some survivors had trouble accessing their Medicaid benefits. The focus on meeting basic needs made it difficult to focus on health care needs, and even a year after the storm, many survivors were still suffering from a lack of health care. The report also includes two important lessons learned from the Hurricane Katrina disaster: continued lessons are needed to connect people with care and medications, and response efforts must focus on the most vulnerable individuals.
