Description:
This technical report provides a series of recommendations for first responders to improve service delivery in culturally diverse communities. The report emphasizes the importance of: the racial/ethnic composition of an emergency response team being similar to that of the community they serve; pre-disaster interaction between first responders and community to build trust; recognizing symptoms of psychological and emotional distress that may extend beyond DSM-IV criteria; and the need to be knowledgeable of culturally specific and non-verbal communication styles.
