This commentary piece describes how one’s ability to survive and recover from a disaster is proportional to their social and physical well being prior to the event and how health disparities inhibit the development of a culture of preparedness.  The author also discusses the situation of Charity Hospital in New Orleans which permanently closed its doors following Hurricane Katrina.
