Description:

The Farmworker CARE (Coordination/ Communication, Advocacy/ Access, Research/ Resources, Empowerment/ Education) coalition is a collaborative of farmworkers, agencies and community based organizations dedicated to improving the living and working conditions of agricultural workers in northern San Diego County, California. During the 2007 wildfires, the Farmworker CARE Coalition provided the organizing and coordinating infrastructure to reach and deliver emergency relief to farmworker communities. For vulnerable communities, such as farmworkers, the 2007 wildfires had a devastating, long term impact on their livelihoods. The Farmworker CARE Coalition witnessed the exclusive nature of how emergency information was disseminated and relief services provided and immediately committed to creating an emergency plan specific to this community. With funding from the Tides foundation and the San Diego Foundation, Vista Community Clinic commissioned the National Latino Research Center at California State University-San Marcos to draft a preparedness plan to be implemented and shared among coalition agencies in collaboration with local governmental and private agencies working in emergency preparedness and response. The results of this process are presented in this document.
