Description:

This MMWR article describes the disproportionate number of H1N1 related deaths among American Indian/Alaska Natives. According to an investigation which spanned 12 states, the rate of H1N1 related deaths in AI/AN was 4.0 times higher than death rates for all other racial/ethnic populations. The article describes the groups involved in this investigation as well as the methods used. Some possible explanations for this disparity include high prevalence of chronic conditions, poverty, and delayed access to care.
