Great Lakes Inter-tribal Council Emergency Preparedness Team

Organization(s):Great Lakes Inter-tribal Council Emergency Preparedness Team
Location:Wisconsin
Available at:www.glitc.org/~ept/   (report broken link)
Description:The mission of this organization is to promote the health and safety of American Indian/Alaskan Natives by preparing for: Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) events; naturally occurring disasters and outbreaks; and other health and homeland security threats and emergencies. However, in many areas of the country, tribes have not had adequate access to these sources of preparedness funding. State preparedness efforts alone do not address unique aspects of tribal preparedness and ignore the special attention required by the relationship between tribal governments and the federal government. The preparedness challenges tribes face include but are not limited to tort claim liability, intergovernmental agreements to assist tribes in requesting federal assets during a disaster, jurisdictional and other border health and safety issues. Therefore, it is very important that tribes have access to this funding so that they are more able to engage in preparedness processes to protect the tribal membership and the surrounding communities.
